The aesthetics of the ordinary

︎︎︎Text: Sabrina Tesch

Jens Mennicke’s photographs are unstaged, authentic, spontaneous images of the everyday world. In his work, we encounter a view of the trivial. A view that is focused and aestheticized through his photography.
Although art photography can easily appear elitist, Mennicke avoids such traps as elitism with his photographs. His themes from everyday life are not elitist at all. Effects are conveyed through minimalism and a harmonious visual language. His camera sharpens the gaze and heightens our awareness of something that is both beautiful and stimulating in photography. Through his photographs, Mennicke creates a new aesthetic perception of the here and now, a moment that previously may not have seemed so interesting to us.
References to Lewis Baltz, Wolfgang Tillmanns or Alex Soth are obvious, as the subjects are apparently chosen at random and placed in the context of triviality. Despite possible references to renowned art photographers, Mennicke's work remains independent and individual in its aesthetic form.
Now, with his series Fragments, Mennicke recreates a heightened version of the everyday world.  The viewer’s gaze is directed to a new aesthetic that appears minimalist and, indeed, clean.
Fragments questions our perspective on the ordinary, on the things that we encounter and that surround us every day, yet are items that we no longer consciously perceive. Mennicke trains our eyes to become attuned to the aesthetics of everyday life. And thus, the artist creates a new perspective on what we perceive.
